Desperate
If you feel like you’re an outcast, then join us here. If you feel misunderstood and judged, this is where you belong.
At the beginning of the Jesus Revolution, a young hippie, Lonnie Frisbee, found his way into a pastor’s house in Southern California. He asked Rev. Chuck Smith what it would take to be truly desperate for God. Lonnie told Chuck, “They are a bunch of kids searching for all the right things in all the wrong places.” He said, “They can only walk through doors open to us.” Then he said, “But your church, well, that’s a door that’s shut.” God sought for a pastor who would respond to the cry of a generation.
Chuck Smith, broke down and found room in his heart for the masses of hippies. He said, “This place, it is yours… If you feel like you’re an outcast, then join us here. If you feel misunderstood and judged, this is where you belong. If you feel ashamed or trapped in something you have done or are doing, you will find forgiveness and freedom right here. No guilt trip. This is your home. And, he said, I want you to tell all your friends about it.
“Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. Rev. 22:17
Lonnie Frisbee was invited to preach in Chuck Smith’s little Calvary Chapel church. He read from the book of Joel about what God promised long ago, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” (Joel 2:28). He said, “God’s Spirit is coming after you…and your children too!”
